Join the UIC Disability Resource Center (DRC), the Disability Culture Advisory Committee (DCAC), and the Asian American Resource and Cultural Center (AARCC) for an evening of spoken word art from UIC students, and from performer, poet, educator, and speaker Kay Ulanday Barrett (http://www.kaybarrett.net/).

A 2009 Campus Pride Hot List artist, 2013 Trans Justice Funding Project Panelist, and 2013 Trans 100 Honoree, Kay Ulanday Barrett is a poet, performer, and educator, navigating life as a disabled pin@y-amerikan transgender queer in the U.S. with struggle, resistance, and laughter.

This event will be ASL interpreted, close-captioned, and audio described. Please also note that this is a scent-free event, so please refrain from wearing any scented or perfumed products to the event.

The Illinois Room B is located on the 3rd floor of the Student Center East building at UIC (750 S. Halsted).

Parking

The closest parking lot to the Student Center East is Lot 4, which is located at Halsted and Polk.

If you are coming from the East (Halsted Street), please note that the access doors on the right are under construction, but the ones on the left are in working order. Once you enter the building, the instructions to the room are as follows:

Elevator Access

As you enter the building from the east, the elevator is just to the right of the entrance. It is elevator #6 and is located in the northeast corner of the main entrance.

Take the elevator to the 3rd floor. As you exit the elevator, there is a short corridor at the end of which you will take a right into a more open hallway. Follow this hallway to the end, and Illinois Room B will be in the right hand corner.

Escalator Access

The escalators are in the middle of the main entrance to Student Center East (coming from west or east entrances). Take the first escalator to the second floor and then make a right-handed U-turn. Follow the hallway to the end, where if you make anther right-handed U-turn, you will see the second set of escalators. Take these to the third floor. Illinois Room B will be in the right hand corner.

On Friday, February 21, Kay Ulanday Barrett will lead a spoken word workshop for students. This event will be from 12:00pm – 1:00pm (Location TBD – we will contact those who RSVP with the location).
